Program Info

  • An introduction to tennis focused on fun and skill development. Children learn to track the ball, move to the impact point, develop groundstroke technique, and serve with an overhead action. Played sideways across a smaller ¼ court with shorter racquets depending on players size (21-23 inches) and low-compression, red balls, softer and lighter at 25% speed of a yellow ball (75% slower), making rallies and varied shot-making accessible from the start. Kids also pick up the basic rules and point play, building a solid foundation while enjoying the game. Lesson length of 30 minutes.

  • For players progressing from Red Stage who can rally but are still developing their game. Played on a ¾-sized court (shorter full court baseline each end) with smaller racquets depending on players size (23-25 inches) and low-compression orange balls, softer and lighter at 50% speed of a yellow ball, mirroring the adult court experience on a junior scale. Full tennis rules apply, with the focus on building a complete shot repertoire and developing the same tactics used in full-court tennis. Lower compression balls support both tactical and biomechanical development. Lesson length of 30 minutes.

Players graduate to Green Stage (full court) once they have a solid all-round skill base, typically at age 9–10, though highly skilled players may transition at 8, and some at 11.

  • The final step before full tennis, played on a full court with larger racquets depending on player size (25-27 inches) and low-compression green balls, softer and lighter at 75% speed of a yellow ball (25% slower). The focus shifts to refining all aspects of the game, beginner players continue building core technique, while more advanced players progress to topspin and handling varied ball spin, height, and depth. Transitional balls support consistency, control, and proper technique development. Full tennis rules apply. Lesson length of 30 minutes.

Players graduate to full court with regular yellow balls once they have a complete skill set, typically at 11 for most, though highly skilled players may transition as early as 9–10.

  • Children are taught complete technique, tactical and tennis specific court movement development in a fun environment. Played on a full-court with regular yellow balls and larger racquets depending on player size (27 inches)

We use the Game-Based coaching method of teaching so they learn to play in a game situation that focus on maximum participation for the whole group, along with individual attention for each player. Lesson length of 30 minutes.

TINTERN GRAMMAR PROGRAM ENROLMENT

Policies + Info

  • Tennis is a program available to students during term time and is timetabled during the school day. The school employs specialist staff according to the numbers of participating students.

The year-level at which co-curricular lessons can be commenced varies according to the activity. Parents are asked to give careful consideration to the number of co-curricular activities taken by their child.

A Junior School student who wishes to enrol in one or more co-curricular lessons does so at the discretion of the Head of the Junior School who will approve each case according to individual needs.

Reports will be given every semester.

  • A course of lessons may be commenced during the year, at the beginning of a term, depending upon the availability of a teacher and timetabling. Application should be made before the end of the previous term.

  • Once lessons are organised it is expected that the commitment be made for the whole term. If a student wishes to discontinue lessons, it should be understood that parents must discuss the situation with the relevant teacher. If lessons are to be discontinued, one term’s notice in writing must be supplied or a term’s fees, in lieu of notice, will be required to be paid. Fees are included on the school fee account.

  • No allowance can be made for lessons missed through the student’s absence or default. However, if notice of an absence is given in advance of the lesson, every effort will be made to make up the missed time. Teachers are under no obligation to make up lessons missed due to family holidays, illness or forgetfulness.

  • Average class size is six students. Students will receive eight lessons per term, giving a total of 32 lessons for the year. Tennis lessons are timetabled throughout the school day on a weekly basis during term time and are charged to the student’s term fee account.

Lessons length is 30 minutes and the cost per term is $180.

  • Note: Age guidelines are flexible. Progression is based on ability, not age. Players can move through stages faster or slower depending on individual development and coach assessment.
